Who are School Counselors?
School counselors play a pivotal role in ensuring the holistic development and well-being of students. They are the linchpin of support within a school, working in close collaboration with students, teachers, families, and the school community to foster an environment where every student can thrive. This page will provide an overview of what school counselors do, using the ASCA National Model as a framework.
What do we do?
Individual Counseling: School counselors offer one-on-one counseling sessions for students facing personal, academic, or social challenges. These sessions provide a safe and confidential space for students to express their concerns, develop problem-solving skills, and set achievable goals.
Group Counseling: Group counseling sessions bring together students facing similar issues, such as bullying, stress, or academic success. In these settings, students learn from each other and develop essential interpersonal skills.
Crisis Response: During times of crisis, school counselors step in to provide immediate support. They assist students in processing traumatic events and help them regain a sense of safety and well-being.
Collaborating with Teachers: School counselors work closely with teachers to identify students in need of support. They help design and implement interventions, ensuring that each student receives the individualized help they require to succeed academically.
Supporting Families and Family Engagement: Counselors engage with families to strengthen the connection between home and school. They offer resources, guidance, and workshops to help parents support their child’s education and well-being.
Collaboration with the Principal and Mental Health Team: Counselors collaborate with the school’s leadership and mental health professionals to design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program. This program addresses the unique needs of each student and the school community.
Holistic Education and Student Ownership: Counselors empower students to take ownership of their education by helping them set goals, explore career options, and develop life skills. They promote a holistic approach to education that nurtures not only academic but also emotional and social growth.
Lesson Planning and Implementation: School counselors create and deliver classroom lessons on topics such as career development, bullying prevention, and study skills. These lessons contribute to the overall academic and personal growth of students.
Relationship Building and Conflict Resolution: Counselors build strong relationships with students, fostering trust and open communication. They also assist students in resolving conflicts with their peers and encourage healthy, positive relationships.
Incorporating the ASCA National Model, school counselors serve as vital members of the school community, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Their multifaceted role contributes to the overall success and well-being of the entire school ecosystem.
