Hello! My name is Mrs. Piro and I am so excited to be teaching 5th grade at Barrett. I have been teaching since 2012. I got my certificate in elementary education from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. I got my masters in curriculum and instruction from George Mason University, right here in Virginia. I used to be a 4th grade teacher at Barrett from 2013-2018 and am so excited to be back! I love integrating technology into my instruction, hands on learning experiences and inquiry based learning. When I'm not teaching you will often find me spending time with my dog, Franklin and my husband. I love the beach, especially Sea Isle City, NJ. I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area and often go back to visit family and eat the best cheesesteaks.

My name is Emily Van Ostern and I teach 5th Grade at Barrett Elementary. This is my 15th year of teaching and is my second year at Barrett. Before joining Barrett I taught in Fairfax County for 11 years in both Kindergarten and 2nd grade. I grew up outside of Boston, MA but came down to DC to attend The George Washington University. I got both my Bachelors and Masters degrees from GW and have lived in the area ever since! I live in Arlington with my husband and our 3 children, Holly (6) and Alden (4) and Bennett (2). I love teaching and helping students find their voice and confidence. In my personal time, I love to cook, read and go on adventures as a family.

Hello! My name is Astrid Godinez and I am a special education resource teacher at Barrett. Before Barrett, I was an instructional assistant for 4 years in Fairfax and came to Barrett in 2022. When I came to Barrett, I stepped into the role of a teacher and now in my third year, I’m excited to continue growing, learning, and making a positive difference in the lives of my students. I earned my Bachelor’s degree at George Mason University and am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Special Education. Born and raised in Arlington, I love exploring my hometown in my free time. I also enjoy traveling, going to concerts, and meeting new people. I’m looking forward to another year!
