Barrett Gives Initiative Receives $5,000 NEA Grant

The National Education Association (NEA) kicked off American Education Week on Monday morning at Barrett Elementary School.

NEA President Becky Pringle was joined by School Board member Zuraya Tapia-Hadley, AEA President June Prakash and cookbook author and digital creator Jeremy Scheck to serve school lunch, read to students and lead a hands-on cooking activity.

In addition, the NEA presented Barrett with a $5,000 donation for its Barrett Gives initiative to purchase gift cards from local grocery stores for families in need. The funds will also be used to purchase ingredients for the school’s upcoming healthy snack demonstration sessions. Families will receive the ingredients used during the session and gift cards to buy additional items, so they can recreate the snacks at home.

The NEA also donated $10,000 to APS to offset lunch debt.
