“String Thing”…Learning about Sound

Today, students in Mrs. Barnette’s class had the opportunity to work with an online game called, “String Thing’. This game is part of the website for the PBS kids engineering show, Design Squad. Students who are in upper elementary, middle, and high school work together using the engineering design process in order to complete a real life engineering challenge. String Thing is a part of a challenge where the students are forming a band and need to understand how sound is made, along with how pitch and amplitude can make a difference in the types of sounds produced within music.

Our fifth graders worked very hard to create some original scores of music and to begin to connect their understanding of the characterisitics of sound and sound is energy!

You can access the game at: http://www.pbskids.org/designsquad. Once at that link, click on Parents and Educators. Then find Games on the left hand side of the page and go to STRING THING. Have fun!
