Students in first grade are working on their engineering design skills in Project Discovery!
We are building up to making our own versions of the International Space Station. Therefore, in order to do so, we read a book called, A Chair For My Mother by Vera Williams. We learned that Josephine’s mother, who works in a diner as a waitress, would really enjoy a new, comfy chair since their furniture was lost in a house fire.
The new chair became our ‘springboard’ in completing an engineering design challenge…we had to build a comfy chair made from gumdrops and toothpicks and it had to lean over the edge of a table! Yikes!!! The students quickly learned that it can be challenging as an engineer, and they got good practice for creating their own models of a space station. Finally, the challenge proved not only to be fun, but yummy as well!!
Check back to the blog soon to see beginning designs of 1st graders space stations. We have heard that some stations will be orbiting around Mars and beyond!
