Helicopters – Using the Engineering Design Process

Second grade students remembered that last year they used the engineering design process to design lunar plant chambers. This week the students reviewed the engineering design process and watched video clips of a girl, a boy, and an adult using the engineering design process with a lacrosse stick, gliders, and robots. The students’ challenge was to design a piece of paper so that it would spin and fall in the hoop. We first made a paper helicopter from a pattern. Then the students used their imagination and creativity to make modifications on the original design or even make a completely new design. Some of the modifications were an improvement, while other modifications were not as success. It was fun showing our helicopters to our principal, Mrs. Bratt! Do you see Mrs. Bratt in the first photo below?
