Puppets and Change….

To culminate our animal and animal coverings unit, first graders designed an animal paper bag puppet. After learning about the different kinds of animal coverings, students chose an animal to replicate using specified materials and a paper bag. Students first designed a plan for their puppet and then created the puppet based on that plan. This is the very essence of engineering design! It was great to see students following what they had planned to do, and it was also very interesting to see those that added to their plan. In fact, several students asked me if that was okay to change their plan as they were constructing their designs!

Engineers usually have a plan when constructing something, but sometimes, the plan gets altered or changed. Change is a big part of our focus here in Project Discovery, and hopefully this experienced enabled students to further understand the importance of planning, and also recognizing that plans can change!!
