Arctic and Antarctic Centers in Discovery Lab

To begin our Arctic & Antarctic unit, students watched a few video podcasts created by fourth graders in a previous year. We watched video podcasts by Alexis, Gabby, Bipin, Carla, & Kevin. The current 4th graders are rotating through three centers in the Discovery Lab in December and January. The enduring understanding guiding our centers is: In order to survive within an ecosystem, organisms adapt and interact with the living and non-living environment. Students are learning about animal adaptations, plant adaptations, the polar food webs (with a review of photosynthesis), and Arctic and Antarctic animals and environments. Check out the Animoto music slideshow for a glimpse of the center activities. The lobster looking creature in the video is supposed to be a krill. Try as I might, I couldn’t find a plastic krill for the simulation!
