My name is Allison Platz, and I’m a Visual Art Teacher at K.W. Barrett Elementary. I’ve been teaching in Arlington Public Schools since 2012 and am very excited to be a part of the Barrett community!

My partner and I just bought our first house right here in Arlington, and we feel so fortunate to live in this community. We have two cats, who may have joined our virtual art classes last year!

I graduated from George Mason University’s Masters in the Art of Teaching program in 2019 to expand my knowledge and professionally grow. Through that experience I came to deeper understandings of how children can learn through the art-making process and decided to focus on a student-centered model of instruction called Choice-Based Art. My goal is to provide each student with a visual art experience tailored to their interests and learning needs, so their thoughts, feelings and ideas can be expressed in each artwork they create. While I enjoy dabbling in every media from paint to fiber arts, my favorite art process is throwing clay on the pottery wheel.
