Safety Screening/Temperature Checks/Masks

  • ALL students must be screened and temperature checked prior to entering the building. They will either be screened at their bus stops prior to boarding the school bus or they will be screened when brought to school.
  • Due to this, all students must be escorted to the school bus stop or to school by a parent, guardian, or an adult that is on the student’s Emergency Contact List (can be edited in ParentVue). The accompanying adult must stay with the student until the screening and temp check is successfully passed. If the student does not pass the screening or temp check, they must return home.
  • All parents/guardians must remain with their children until their children have successfully passed the temperature screening.
    • Please be prepared to show your child’s “cleared” status to the daily health screening completed via text or email.
  • All students will be screened prior to entry into the building. Upon successfully passing the temperature screening, students will then enter the building.
    • Students that do not pass the screening will need to go home for the day.
    • Students will not be allowed to leave the school by themselves if they do not pass the daily screening. A parent/guardian/emergency contact will need to escort them home.
  • ALL students (unless they have a medical exemption on file at the school) MUST wear a mask while at school. On the first day of Level 2, we will send all students home with 2 masks.
  • All students will go directly to their classrooms upon entry into the building
    • There will be staff members available to help students find their classrooms.Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
      • ALL STUDENTS PREK-5 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED TO SCHOOL BY AN ADULT – IF A STUDENT DO NOT PASS SCREENING THEY NEED TO BE SENT HOME WITH AN ADULT.
      • KISS & RIDE: Please enter the school parking lot at the side entrance on George Mason Drive. Drive around the building until you reach the front of the school (Door 1). Please follow the posted car directions. Staff will greet you at your car to screen your student(s) for entrance to the building.
        • Dismissal: Please follow the same car line up procedures as for arrival. On the first day of Level 2, you will be given a Pick Up Sign that you can hold up to let staff know who you are picking up so that we can escort students from class out for dismissal. Please DO NOT exit your vehicle and follow all posted and staff provided directions to ensure safe and orderly Kiss & Ride arrival and dismissal.
      • WALKERS: Please walk up to the walker entrance door closest to your home (Front of School: Door 2) (Back of School: Door 5). Wait on the designated lines in order to remain socially distanced. A staff member will greet you, screen your student(s) and will then send them into the building to be escorted to their classrooms. All students in wheelchairs or needing support with accessing the building independently will use the ramp at Door 1.
        • Dismissal: Please line up in the same area used for arrival in the morning. On the first day of Level 2, you will be given a Pick Up Sign that you can hold up to let staff know who you are picking up so that we can escort students from class out for dismissal. Please follow all posted and staff directions in order to ensure safe and orderly Walker dismissal. ** Please dress appropriately for the weather! – There is no building access or change in the routine/location due to inclement weather, including rain or snow.
      • APS SCHOOL BUS: Once the bus routes begin, students will be screened at the bus stops prior to boarding the school buses. Once busses arrive at school, students will be greeted by staff and escorted, socially distanced, into the building using Door 3. ONLY BUS RIDERS MAY ACCESS THE BUILDING AT DOOR 3.
        • Dismissal: Once busses arrive, students will be escorted, socially distanced, from their classrooms to their school bus. They will be assisted with getting on the bus.

Breakfasts & Lunch

  • ALL students may eat free breakfast at school. Students (or the staff escorting them to their classroom) may pick up breakfast as they enter the building. Students will eat breakfast in their classrooms.
  • ALL students may eat free lunch at school. Lunches will be delivered to the classrooms. Students will eat lunch in their classrooms or, weather permitting, outside.
  • Please send a lunch towel (bath towel or beach towel size) to school with your child daily.Recess
    • ALL students will be taken outside (weather permitting) for recess in their class groupings.
    • Recess will be 30 minutes and will include a 5 minute transition time.
    • Students must continue to wear masks outside during recess and if they are engaging in physical activity they will be kept 10 feet apart for safety.
    • Please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.Level 2 Learning Schedules: Your students will be following the same schedules in Level 2 (with the exception of some minor shifts that will be communicated by your student’s teachers) that they have been following at home in full-distance learning. If you would like another copy of your schedule, please let your student’s homeroom teacher know.

General Information

  • ParentVue: Please go into ParentVue and make sure your information is accurate. Parent contacts such as phone numbers, emails, and emergency contacts are very important! You can log-in to ParentVue at: https://www.apsva.us/family-access-center/. If you need support with ParentVue please contact Sandra Espinoza at sandra.espinoza@apsva.us or at 703-228-6288.
  • Attendance: If your student needs to be absent, please call the attendance line at 703-228-8545. Please give your student’s name, your name, your phone number, and list why your student is absent.
  • Student Work Space: Each student has a personal work space in the building for Level 2. Students will remain in that space, distanced at least 6 feet away from other students and staff. Staff will attempt to maintain 6 foot distance from students unless the student need is such that the staff, with appropriate PPE, must come into closer contact in order to provide support.
  • Student Supplies/Backpacks: Students will have individual basic supplies available to them in their work spaces. Please send your student daily with the following:
    • iPad
    • charging cord
    • charging brick
    • water bottle
    • lunch towel (to sit on outside)
    • any learning materials they may need as shared by their teacherThese items must go back and forth between school and home daily so use of a backpack for transport would be ideal. Backpacks and coats will be kept at student desks.

SELF-CARE

  • Handwashing → Practice handwashing for 20 seconds. They can sing “happy birthday” or count “1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi”
  • Masks → Have your child wear a mask for long periods of time, gradually increasing the amount of time from now until the return to school.
  • Have them practice putting on and removing mask all by themselves.
  • Teach to take proper care of their mask (for example: not to put on the floor, then wear again, fold gently and place in a safe spot within their backpack or desk space)
  • We will provide 2 masks per child on their first day in person. We suggest you send an extra mask for your child to wear if the first one gets dirty. If you need assistance with anything related to returning to school in Level 2, please do not hesitate to contact the school at 703-228-6288.We are looking forward to greeting your students! See you soon!
