Barrett Celebrates Employees and Teacher of the Year

Barrett is happy to announce this year’s Employees and Teacher of the Year!

Please join us in congratulating Marvin Flores, Asli Hundessa, Jose Vasquez, Arturo Ramirez, and Katie Aiken! Nominated by their peers and colleagues, these individuals are recognized for their hard work and dedication to the students, staff and community of K.W. Barrett Elementary.


20161221_111121Marvin Flores is Barrett’s nominee for X-Scale Support Employee of the Year. As the Extended Day Supervisor at Barrett, Mr. Flores oversees the program, supervises and provides ongoing feedback to staff members, communicates effectively with parents, and focuses on providing a rich experience for all enrolled students. He is also an active member of the Barrett community, participating in school-wide events and working to create a welcoming environment for staff, students, and families.

Barrett nominates Asli Hundessa as the G-Scale Support Employee of the Year. 20161221_111207In her role as the Educational Administrative Coordinator, she maintains the general operation of the main office at Barrett. She oversees the financial operations of the school and manages substitutes on a daily basis–both highly involved, complex tasks. Moreover, Ms. Hundessa helps to create a welcoming, friendly environment for our parents and visitors as they come into the school building with a variety of needs and questions. She brings in her own cultural background and traditions to school-wide heritage events, which helps to make connections and form relationships with students, staff, and parents.

Jose Vasquez is Barrett’s nominee for M-Scale Support Employee of the Year. VasquezAs one of the evening custodians, Mr. Vasquez works tirelessly to maintain the building and create a safe, welcoming environment for students, staff, and families. He sets up and takes down for a variety of evening events, both for community use (sports team practices, homeowner association meetings, e.g.) and school-wide events. He demonstrates flexibility and a strong work ethic, always willing to come in on weekends or snow emergency days when needs arise in order to ensure the safety of all.

 

Barrett is proud to nominate Arturo Ramirez as the A-Scale Support Employee of the Year this year. 20161221_114413Mr. Ramirez has previously served as an instructional assistant at Barrett but changed roles this year to act as the Family Engagement Coordinator. In this role, he organizes and supports a variety of family programs, including Friday Volunteers, Real Madrid Youth Soccer program, and Roving Readers. He is an active member of the Barrett community, demonstrating a strong ability to form relationships with students, staff, and families.

Katie Aiken was selected as Barrett’s nominee for Teacher of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. 20161221_110557She teaches art to students in preschool through fifth grades, delivering creative, thoughtful, and differentiated lessons. She is extremely dedicated to her students’ success, showcasing their accomplishments throughout the school and community and communicating both proactively and responsively to students’ families. She has taken on leadership roles in several school-wide events, such as STEAM night and Barrett Creates, and taken on community projects such as the CBG Walkway Project with last year’s fourth graders. She imparts her love of art on the students, empowers them to create every day, and is constantly seeking out ways to grow professionally.
