Rising 6th Grade Academic Transition Information and Activities Timeline

Middle School Information Video

Families of students entering middle school in the fall of 2024 will learn about the transition to middle school, core classes, electives, and extracurriculars. Families interested in option schools/programs or neighborhood transfers will learn about the application and lottery process.

Middle School Information Sessions – December 2024 & January 2025:

Each middle school offers an in-person information session between December and January. Families are encouraged to attend to learn about their assigned neighborhood school or option school of interest, meet school staff, and ask questions. See full schedule here
Middle Schools Visit Elementary Schools – January – February 2025

A middle school counselor will be coming to Barrett Elementary school to present on the school and course request forms.

HB Woodlawn does NOT come to visit since they have their own timelines and orientations.

Course Request Forms

CRFs are the forms the 5th graders will use to request their courses for 6th grade. These forms are to be filled out with their parent(s) or caregiver(s).

CRFs will be digital on Google Forms, accessed through Canvas.

5th Grade Students
Visit Middle Schools

5th graders will be visiting their assigned homeschool during the school day. Buses will be provided to all schools that you have students going to. Central Office coordinates buses and which day your students will go. If you have a preferred date, let Heather know ASAP.

Permission slips are required.

Visits are from 10:00am – 11:30am and do NOT include lunch

Students accepted into HB Woodlawn are encouraged to visit their neighborhood school.

5th Grade Grouping Cards TBD “Grouping Card” spreadsheets communicate academic levels, interventions, IEP or 504, or social-emotional or behavioral needs. They are completed collaboratively by 5th grade teachers and student services staff.

Option Schools & Programs Application Timeline: TBD

  • Application Window: Students interested in attending an option middle school/program must submit an online application between TBD and TBD.
  • HB Woodlawn: 75 6th-grade slots are available. Click here to learn more about the slots available for each elementary school.

Option Schools & Programs Lottery: TBD

  • The 2024-25 school year lotteries for the middle and high school option programs will be held online on TBD.
  • Families are notified of their acceptance or placement on the waitlist by email and/or text by TBD.
  • If the number of applications exceed the available seats for any of the Options Schools, APS will conduct a lottery to determine admission.
  • If families apply to more than one school/program, their application will go into all lotteries simultaneously.
  • Families do NOT receive lottery results on the day of the automated lottery.

Option Schools & Programs Lottery Notification: TBD

  • Families will be notified of their acceptance or placement on the waitlist by email and/or text by the APS Welcome Center on TBD
  • If families do not accept or decline their seat by the deadline, their seat will be given to the next student on the waitlist.

Option Schools & Programs Accept/Decline Deadline: TBD

  • Families must confirm or decline attendance to the school or program by TBD

Transferring to Another School Timeline for 2024-2025

An announcement regarding which schools, if any, will accept transfers for the following school year is made in early February after the January enrollment update to the Superintendent and the School Board.

Neighborhood Transfer Application Timeline:

  • If neighborhood middle schools (Dorothy Hamm, Gunston, Kenmore, Jefferson, Swanson, or Williamsburg) are accepting neighborhood transfer

Neighborhood Transfer Lottery:
TBD

  • If the number of applications exceed the available seats for any of the neighborhood schools, APS will conduct a lottery to determine admission.
  • If families apply to more than one school/program, their application will go into all lotteries simultaneously.
