Welcome to Advanced Academics and Talent Development at Barrett Elementary School! Please take a look through the helpful links in the menu on the right to discover more about what Barrett has to offer our growing scholars.
Arlington Public Schools is dedicated to maximizing the strengths and potential of all students so they may become self-confident, well-rounded, responsible and productive citizens. Many gifted students need opportunities to think abstractly, work at various rates and levels of complexity, and pursue tasks independently. In addition, students eligible for gifted services need opportunities to learn with others of like abilities, as well as opportunities to develop social relationships with others of all abilities.

My name is Erin VerWest, and I’m excited to be at Barrett Elementary again this year as the Advanced Academics Coach. I was born and raised in South Jersey, not too far from the beach. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University (Go Bobcats!) and my Master’s in Administration & Supervision from the University of Virginia. I have been an educator for 15 years and I am passionate about working with children and teachers. I’ve taught at a tiny private school in New Jersey and three different schools in Fairfax County that have all helped me learn and grow as a teacher. I enjoy helping students think critically and creatively, discover and develop their strengths and interests, ask and ponder big questions, and make real-world connections through their school experience. I live in Arlington with my husband and two sons. When I’m not teaching, you will likely find me at a youth sports event, on a family adventure, listening to a podcast, or reading a book.
